DVPA "Quick and Current" May 13, 2010
SATR Missing in GPS Database - As many of you have already found out, the SATR does not appear in the new Garmin database updates. One of our DVPA members queried Garmin on it not being there and following is the Garmin response ---
“The Special Air Traffic Rule that is in effect starting 6 May 10 has been reviewed by our standards department and we will NOT be capturing this area in our database at this time.
This area applies to VFR acft operations only and outlines the communication requirements that are needed within this area between VFR operations and Luke Apch Control.
Also as you note, this doesn't fit cleanly into any existing SUA type for ARINC.”
SATR Airspace Feedback - The general consensus is that the SATR depiction on the TAC and Sectional charts creates more questions than answers. PHX TRACON is interested in feedback on the new airspace. Your suggestions and comments can be directed to Ed Chauza, EChauza@aol.com and they will be discussed at the next meeting of the Phoenix Airspace Users Work Group (PAUWG). A suggestion being discussed with TRACON is dropping the flyways (CANAL & GILA) and adding a more detailed panel to the chart depicting the SATR airspace. The flyways are rarely being flown or requested and most likely would create little to no adverse effect if dropped.
SATR Transition - A reminder to pilots wishing to transit the SATR airspace is to establish 2 way radio contact before entering the airspace. As shown in the pictorial from the TAC chart, the boundary between DVT Class D and SATR is only a mile plus wide. That distance can be traversed very quickly (30+ Seconds at 120kts). DVT TWR will provide an early frequency change to help manage the close proximity of controlled airspaces. The same applies to coming from the west, request an early frequency change from LUK RAPCON to allow sufficient time to contact DVT TWR for Class D clearance.
Review the procedures on the DVPA web site. Don't forget the new Phoenix Sectional and Phoenix Terminal Area charts are in effect, showing the new, unique airspace.
DVT TWR Manager Leaving - Tower Manager, Toby Jones, will be returning to PHX TRACON as originally planned. In fact Toby stayed a year longer because he was having so much fun. The official date is June 6 and at that time Brian Donnelly will become the DVT Tower Manager. Brian is coming up from the TRACON and has experience at TUS, PRC, SoCal TRACON, and Phoenix TRACON.
Our gracious thanks to Toby and his team for helping us thru the trying times of runway incursions, runway crossing procedures, SATR implementation and the new run-up area. Best of luck, our friend, in the new career opportunities.
The Sibran - Deer Valley self-serve would like to thank the many DVPA members who submitted their comments about the self-serve through the survey over the recent weeks. Sibran would also like to congratulate Ben Shetler on winning the $50 fuel gift card through the random drawing of survey responders.
