Swift Enterprises Ltd. of West Lafayette, IN has developed a biomass-synthesized fuel that may replace 100 octane low-lead, according to the July 27 issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology.
The product has demonstrated detonation protection and energy output equal to or better than 100LL. The fuel contains no alcohol or oxygenates and mixes readily with existing 100LL simplifying storage and transportation.
Swift’s management says the technical approval timeline is “very open,” and could take another two years.
The 100LL replacement can be made at converted existing ethanol plants – many now idle. Three converted plants with 100,000-gal. capacity could produce enough to satisfy all general aviation needs.
With high enough production, the company estimates retail cost of the biofuel could be as low as $2 per gallon.
